Test Session #2

After reading spark plugs last week it was very clear we had to make some changes - the dominator was jetted down three in the front and two in the back, the plugs were also changed in favor of ones two steps cooler. Well, it must have been the right move, the Camaro responded with it's best pass ever - 11.16 @ 121 mph.

Though we felt better about the performance, we still didn't like how the carburetor was acting. So, while we look for a new carburetor, the old 850 is going back on.

We also tested with 50 pounds in the trunk and the car lost - that's a good sign. Last year, the more weight you added to the rear, the faster it went. Looks like the Cal-Tracs paid off.

Test Results and Setup:

  • ET: 11.16
  • MPH: 121
  • 60': 1.61
  • RPM at Finish: ~6000
  • Shift Point: ~6000-6200
  • Converter Stall: 4200 (I looked this time)
  • Tire pressure: 15
  • Carburetor: Holley 9375

Conclusions:

  • We need a new carburetor - the dominator may be faster, but it's not consistent.
  • More low end torque is needed - a 4150 style carb may fix this, if not, a new 8" converter or smaller tube headers.
  • Cooler plugs were the right move.
  • We need to finish up our new heads - that means me I guess.
